Charter = County Executive
"A Strong and Accountable Voice for Macomb County"

What, Why and How?
WHAT is Charter = County Executive?
Charter = County Executive is a bipartisan group of Macomb County citizens who have joined together because they see a need for an elected Macomb County executive and a reduced number of part-time Macomb County commissioners with a written Charter (constitution) approved by the voters.
WHY should we do it?
HOW can this be done?
In these tough ecomonic times, Macomb County needs an elected leader who will be a strong voice for Macomb County, accountable to all the people of Macomb County, and who will make County government more efficient and effective to better service its residents and save tax dollars. An elected county executive will be more effective promoting the County’s economic development efforts, will fight to retain and promote good-paying jobs in the County, and will advocate for us in Lansing and Washington DC. The present system of 26 part-time commissioners trying to run the County by committee is outdated and dysfunctional. Our current county commissioners each earn $34,000/year plus family health care insurance plus other benefits for a part-time job that requires attending approximately six meetings per month.

In February 2007, a group of business and labor leaders asked the Macomb County Board of Commissioners to put the issue on the ballot for the voters to decide the issue. The majority of the commissioners voted no. So from May 2007 to October 2007, our ballot committee with the help of over 400 volunteers collected 35,000 petition signatures from Macomb County voters to force the Macomb County Board of Commissioners to put the issue on the May 6, 2008 ballot. This ballot issue gives us the right to vote on whether Macomb County should have an elected county executive and a reduced number of part-time county commissioners. Now we must educate the voters on the ballot question and show them the exact language that will lead to an elected county executive and a reduced number of county commissioners. As mandated by State law, the ballot language must state: “Shall the county of Macomb elect a charter commission for the purpose of framing and submitting to the electorate of the county a county home rule charter under the constitution and laws of Michigan.”
